Abstract:
  • Abstract is in Icelandic

  • Background: The incidence of natural disasters in the world is increasing. Increased numbers of nurses go abroad through aid organizations and participate in disaster relief work in support of the sick and injured. It is important to consider what factors in preparation and physical training have proved to be useful among nurses to deal with difficult situations and possible consequences.
Purpose: An attempt was made to answer two research questions. On the one hand, how the preparation for departure to the disaster area affects the experience of nurses in the field and, on the other hand, whether the preparation for departure to the disaster area affects the well-being of nurses after they come back home.
Method: A mixed method was used. A systematic literature review of research articles from the data bases PubMed and CINAHL and interviews with three nurses. Articles published from March 2009 through March 2019 were searched for by defined keywords, inclusion and exclusion criteria. Search results were presented according to the PRISMA flow chart and the quality of the research evaluated. The interview results were thematically analyzed for common themes.
Results: A total of six quantitative and eight qualitative studies were used that met the criteria. Nurses experienced uncertainty, worse psychosocial and physical health during missions. There is a need for further training in disaster nursing, cultural competence and teamwork among nurses to prepare them for disaster relief jobs. There was as well an increased risk of developing traumatic stress disorder and depression following missions. Practical training was thought as more useful than theoretical instruction when it comes to preparation. Based on the responses from the nurses interviewed, five themes were identified; seize the opportunity, uncertainty, difficult times, and challenging circumstances, "knowledge is power" and support at the scene and after returning home.
Discussion and conclusion: Further research is needed on the preparation of nurses for work in missions. There is also a need to better examine the impact of the work on the health and well-being of the nurses. Disaster nursing and cultural training courses could be helpful to nurses and nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
