The Pro-Flex is a prosthetic foot developed and manufactured by Össur hf. This report describes the development process of the Pro-Flex. The initial reason for the Pro-Flex development was to improve upon the function of an existing Össur foot, the Proprio. The Proprio had poor vertical shock absorption and range of motion due to its limited carbon fiber blade design. The development project was started by evaluating several alternate prototype designs using product design methods. Subsequently, the highest scoring prototype was selected for further development, a three blade version with three pivots. The project went through five different major prototype designs, where pivot connecting adapters and carbon fiber blades were all modified as a result of ISO testing failure. The final version failed its original design intent of increasing vertical shock absorption but succeeded in increasing the range of motion by over 100%. Additionally, the Pro-Flex has very high ankle power which, combined with the high range of motion, reduces the load on the sound side by over 10%. The end result is a prosthetic foot that performs exceptionally well for trans-tibial users in all walking conditions. Since launch, the Pro-Flex is perceived as the most advanced mechanical foot available in the market.
