Project portfolio management is an important tool within project driven companies to manage their ongoing projects in an optimal way. A challenging part of portfolio managements is the selection and prioritization process of projects. Research was conducted on Icelandic companies to investigate their approach on selection and prioritization process within their portfolios. The research method used was an online survey which received answers from 22 individuals in 19 companies. Part of they survey was a model to measure level of engagement between strategy and portfolio in companies. The main results of the survey were that Icelandic companies are mainly using strategic fit and financial benefits as selection factors for projects. Other factors are also used to select projects but these two were the most widely used. Regarding the prioritization then few of the companies are using formal scoring models, they are more commonly using some form of subjective decision making based on various factors. Results from the engagement model show that common elements can be found for the highest ranking companies, such as their portfolios contained less than 20 projects, resources were secured early in the process and project prioritization was clearly communicated.
