This thesis focuses on a study on the implementation of In another‘s shoes: project in social studies in compulsory schools in Iceland. I designed this project in 2015-2016 and improved it in 2018 before I taught it for the first time. The study was conducted in a school where I did my practife teaching in the fall of 2018, which took three months, but the study itself lasted ten weeks. In another‘s shoes is a project that was designed by me. The aim of the project is to enable students to be able to walk in the shoes of their peers in different countries or regions of the world. At the end of the project, students should be able to solve issues without having their nationality color their attitudes. Students will go on a research expedition through a country that they are randomly assigned. This journey takes place through websites, apps and textbooks. The project is largely based on the integration of social subjects. The theoretical background of the project and the philosophy on which the project is based are reviewed in the thesis. The project and its process are presented, as well as the data gathered in the study and its findings are submitted. I have not found any sources that show that a similar project has been developed, but it does in some ways resemble the Scottish method and the methods developed by the Icelandic teacher Herdís Egilsdóttir.
The research data included a diary, students surveys, and focus group interviews which conducted at the end of the on-location study. The study's findings showed that the project can be used for teaching social studies although it needs to be revised in terms of the wording of questions, better and more effective democratic teaching practices, and with an improved link to ethical issues.
At the end of the thesis you can find resources that were used for teaching and evaluating the project. The resources are free for others who are interested to try the project.
