Um 77% ónýtanlegra skóga á Vesturlandi fékk það mat vegna tveggja flokka: „stofnar of kræklóttir“ eða „vöxtur of lítill“.

Forestry stakeholders in western Iceland have great faith and interest in the prospects of the forest resource in Iceland. That is why this project was designed to answer some key questions about the current state of forests in western Iceland, as well as predicting their future growth the next 30 years. The study area was from Gilsfjarðarbotn in the north to Strandaheiði in the south. Data from the Icelandic National Forest Inventory (ÍSÚ), as well as the forest growth simulation program IceForest, were used to identify the present status and forecast the future volume growth and carbon sequestration of forests for this region in Iceland.
Questions addressed in this project include: i) what is the area of harvestable forests in W-Iceland? ii) Where are they located? iii) How is the forest ownership? And lastly iv) How will the future growth of the forests be from 2019 to 2049. Two scenarios were presented in the model to assess how the amount of standing timber, as well as the amount of sequestered carbon could vary until 2049, depending on whether the forests would be utilized (scenario 2; S2) or not (scenario 1; S1).
The total area of harvestable forests in W-Iceland was estimated to be 2.870 ha (± 630). The ratio of harvestable forests was estimated to be 47% of all planted forests in the region. Most harvestable forests were located close to Reykjavik and in the southern part of W-Iceland, up to and including the Skorradalur valley. Around a third of harvestable forests were on governmental land, another third was privately owned and yet another third was owned by various NGOs and forestry associations. Around 77% of unhvarvestable forests were estimated to be unharvestable because of the factors: „stems too crooked“or „insufficient growth“.
The standing volume in harvestable forests was estimated to be about 110,000 m3 (±50,000) in 2019 in both S1 and S2. Standing volume in S1 was estimated to increase to ca. 680,000 m3 (± 200,000) at the end of the forecast in 2049. Standing volume in S2, which included thinnings, final fellings and other management for sustainable timber management during the period, was estimated to increase to about 410,000 m3 (± 130,000) at the end of the forecast in 2049. Total harvestable volume in S2 over the course of the 30-year forecast was estimated to be about 190,000 m3 (± 90,000). This the wood volume which will be available for those who plan to utilize the forest resource in W-Iceland during the next 30 years.
The amount of carbon (C) stored in harvestable forests in S1 was estimated to increase from 40.000 ton C in 2019 to 280.000 ton C in 2049. In S2, the amount of C stored in harvestable forests was estimated to increase from 40,000 ton C in 2019 to 160,000 ton C in 2049. Even though the total amount of stored C until 2049 less in S2 than in S1, then it still had a major increase of C stock during the period even if the forests were harvested.
If the 190,000 m3 of timber that are estimated to be harvested in S2 during the next 30-year period were sold today, then the estimated revenue would be 3,840,000.000 ISK. That equals an average yearly revenue of 128,000,000 ISK. These revenue numbers do not take starting costs of forestry into account and are purely based on pricelists from Skógræktin from 2019. Further, the Net Present Value of all operations was not considered.
