  • The following paper is a final thesis for BA-degree in creative music communication at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The subject matter is music and music therapy as a treatment for Alzheimer’s or dementia. The thesis statement is whether music and music therapy have recognizable effect on people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. No cure or medicine has been discovered for Alzheimer’s or dementia despite significant research all over the world. Music Therapy has been one of the most successful treatments for people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. An attempt will be made to present and explain the Alzheimer’s disease, its symptoms and a brief chapter will address history of music therapy, both domestically and abroad. A short look will be taken at two of the most common methods used in music therapy, followed by an overview on the project Music for Life. Lastly the author visited a nursing center called Hlíðabær which is a nursing home for those who suffer from early onset dementia. These visits were carried out for the author to get a perspective on whether and how music affected the protégé staying at the nursing center but not as a quantitative research. Research reveal that music and music therapy have a positive influence on people suffering from dementia and increase their general quality of life as well as having considerable affect on their self-image and communications with next of kin and carers at the nursing center.
