  • Despite the fact that numerous studies show unequivocal benefits for the school work to focus on strengthening and developing social and emotional skills, there are many indications that school work in Iceland has not come very far in this area and that these issues have not been extensive in education of children in this country. Emphasis on strengthening social and emotional skills (SEL) has been gaining ground abroad and research has shown that it is yielding great results. In short, social and emotional education is about developing five skills that include analyzing one's own feelings and those of others, dealing with stress, following in the footsteps of others, showing empathy, communicating well with others, making wise decisions, and more. An attempt will be made here to shed light on three research questions. What can be deduced from research on what are the most effective ways to strengthen social and emotional skills ?, what factors need to be present in school work and the school environment in order for emphasis on social and emotional skills to be as effective as possible? and how can the emphasis on strengthening social and emotional skills be used in dealing with and preventing challenging behavior? This will be done by looking at a number of studies and pointing out useful ways that can be useful to teachers in emphasizing students' emotional and social skills. Ways to build an environment that supports these emphases will also be discussed. It is clear that SEL's emphasis could have great value for Icelandic school work, but the results show, among other things, improved well-being of students and teachers, better academic results and less demanding behavior, to name but a few.
