  • The research is based on a content analysis of pictures that appear in textbooks within the Ministry of Education in Iceland, which are intended for history teaching at the High School Level, for students ages 13 – 15 years old. The study was conducted in the year 2020 and the books published on the Ministry of Education´s website for the school year 2019 – 2020 for history teaching at the High School Level were researched. Previous research has shown that there is a considerable deficit in the position of women in both coverage and publication of images. The position of women in history in general is deficient and the results of previous comparable studies indicate that the white man owns the stage. In recent years, a checklist has been set up for textbook authors to rely on but they underline the importance of men and women appearing in an equivalent way in textbooks, and the law on the equal status of women in textbooks has been revised with regard to balance between the sexes, most recently in 2008. Despite this, the woman seems to have less space on textbook pages compared to the man. The position of women is not only bad in history teaching in Iceland, but the problem is widespread. The reason for this position of the woman is considered to be either out of habit or out of fear. It is customary to tell the story from the political timeline, and there the man has owned the stage and that is said to be the reason why the story is masculine.
The study was conducted with a content analysis where information was gathered by looking at and analyzing images based on certain factors. The pictures went into three categories according to themes and from there into subcategories. At the same time, there was a content analysis based on a head count, where images were counted based on the publication of individuals based on gender. The results of the study were comparable to the studies we knew from before. Women are not given a place in the textbooks and are therefore not allowed to be active participants in the timeline of history except to a small extent. The white, non-disabled, heterosexual man seems to own the stage. Also in the pictures.
