Fordæmalausir tímar : reynsla leikskólastjóra á tímum Covid-19

Abstract

Heimsfaraldur Covid-19 kom eins og þruma úr heiðskíru lofti yfir allt samfélagið. Hlutverk leikskólastjóra var að takast á við þessa tíma, með öllum þeim áskorunum sem fylgja krísum. Markmiðið var skýrt, heilsa og vellíðan barna og starfsfólk var í forgrunni allan tímann. Engar rannsóknir hafa verið gerðar á störfum leikskólastjóra á tímum heimsfaraldurs hér á landi svo vitað sé en fyrri rannsóknir um krísustjórnun gefa til að kynna að skýr sýn og öflug forysta séu mikilvægir þættir í krísum. Litið er á leikskóla sem eina af grunnstoðum samfélags og því mikilvægt að varpa ljósi á reynslu leikskólastjóra af stjórnun á tímum heimsfaraldurs. Tilgangur rannsóknarinnar var að kanna reynslu leikskólastjóra í starfi í fyrstu bylgju Covid-19 á Íslandi sem var frá 13. mars til 4. maí. Athugað var hvernig þeim tókst sem leiðtogum að takast á við erfiða tíma og hvaða áherslur og aðferðir þeir nýttu til þess að komast í gegnum tímabilið og hvernig þeir sem einstaklingar tókust á við það. Að auki var skoðað hvort greina mætti einhverja sameiginlega reynslu eða upplifun hjá leikskólastjórum sem gæti haft áhrif á framtíðarskipulag í leikskólum. Í rannsókninni komu fram þrjú meginþemu. Fyrsta þema fjallar um það álag sem varð á tímabilinu, annað þemað fjallar um samvinnu sem myndaðist á tímabilinu og þriðja þemað lýsir hvernig starfsfólk og skólasamfélagið valdefldist á tímabilinu.Niðurstöður gefa til kynna mikilvægi þess að hafa skýr markmið, skýra sýn og að gefa starfsfólki leikskóla hlutdeild í þeim verkefnum sem það á að takast á við, jafnframt nauðsyn þess að hlusta á og virða líðan og tilfinningar fólks og að styðja starfsfólk við að takast á við erfið og flókin verkefni. Niðurstöðurnar gefa einnig til kynna að ekki er hægt að leggja endalaust álag á fólk og að hlúa þurfi vel að öllum, ekki síst stjórnendum. Niðurstöðurnar gefa jafnframt vísbendingar um að áherslur og aðferðir þjónandi forystu og lærdómssamfélagsins séu árangursríkar til þess að leiða skólastarf á tímum álags og áfalla. Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar geta verið framlag til þekkingar um árangursríkar áherslur í stjórnun á tímum heimsfaraldurs og geta nýst innan skóla sem og fyrir aðra sem takast á við óvæntar áskoranir og krísur.

Seemingly out of nowhere Covid-19 has emerged and spread around society. The role of pre-school principals is to respond to this situation with all it‘s challenges and crisis. Their aim was clear being the health and wellbeing of children and teachers and held in focus the whole time. In Iceland, limited research has been conducted on the work of pre-school principals during times of pandemic, but research about crisis management illuminate the importance of clear vision and strong leadership in working through times of crisis. Preschools are one of the underlying foundations of society. Therefore it is of importance to shed light on the experience of pre-school principals as leaders of the work within their schools during time of the pandemic. The purpose of the study was to investigate the experience of pre-school principals through the first wave of Covid-19 in Iceland, more exactly from March 13th to May 4th 2020. First to shed light on how pre-school principals managed, as leaders and individuals, to respond to the crisis the society confronted and on emphasis and ways of working they utilized to work through this period. Second, to shed light on their experiences and commonalities among participants‘ experiences that can be helpful for future ideas about the organization of preschools. Three main themes emerged from the interviews. The first theme sheds light on increased workload during the period. The second theme focuses on the collaboration formed during this time period. The third theme describes how staff and the whole school community was empowered during this time. The findings indicate the importance of clear goals, clear vision and to give staff members ownership of the tasks they needed to respond to. In addition, it was important for pre-school principals to listen to and respect individuals‘ feelings and emotions and support the whole staff to respond to challenging and complex tasks. The findings also indicate that it is impossible to put endless workload on individuals and you need to attend to everyone, including principals. The findings further provide insights into how the emphasis and strategies of servant leadership and the learning community can be effective in leading school work in times of stress and crisis. Finally, the findings can be a contribution to knowledge about effective emphasis in leadership during times of pandemic and can be used within schools and for others having to respond to unexpected challenges and crisis.
