Skemmtiþáttur eða söguleg heimild? : birtingarmynd hins pólitíska landslags Evrópu í Söngvakeppni evrópskra sjónvarpsstöðva á árunum 1990-2019

Abstract

Ritgerð þessi fjallar um hvernig pólitískt landslag Evrópu endurspeglast í sjónvarpsviðburðinum Söngvakeppni evrópskra sjónvarpsstöðva, öðru nafni Eurovision. Til hliðsjónar var höfð sú regla Sambands evrópskra sjónvarpsstöðva að Söngvakeppnin sé með öllu ópólitískur sjónvarpsviðburður og að ríkisreknar sjónvarpsstöðvar þátttökulandanna skuli gera allt sem í þeirra valdi stendur til að viðhalda keppninni sem slíkri. Tilgangur ritgerðarinnar er að sýna fram á að Söngvakeppni evrópskra sjónvarpsstöðva sé ekki einungis árlegur sjónvarpsviðburður til dægrastyttingar, heldur endurspegli keppnin bæði menningarlega og pólitíska sögu Evrópu. Aðalmarkmið ritgerðarinnar er að kanna hvernig birtingarmynd hins pólitíska landslags Evrópu kemur fram í keppninni. Farið var yfir þróun keppninnar frá árinu 1990 til 2019 og fundin dæmi um pólitísk áhrif, annars vegar um áhrif pólitískra atburða á keppnina og hins vegar um atvik með pólitískri skírskotun í keppninni sjálfri. Niðurstöður ritgerðarinnar sýna að pólitískt landslag Evrópu endurspeglast í keppninni, þá sérstaklega landslagið í Austur-Evrópu þar sem uppbrot Júgóslavíu annars vegar og Sovétríkjanna hins vegar höfðu mikil áhrif á keppnina. Tilgangur keppninnar í upphafi var að sameina þjóðir Evrópu eftir langt tímabil stríðsátaka í gegnum tónlist. Á sama tíma og lagt er upp með því að keppnin sé með öllu ópólitískur viðburður er hún vettvangur til þess að endurspegla ólík menningarleg og félagsleg einkenni hins fjölþjóðlega samfélags álfunnar. This thesis examines how the political landscape of Europe gets reflected in the television event called Eurovision Song Contest. Taken into consideration was the European Broadcasting Union‘s rule that says that Eurovision is altogether an unpolitical television event and that the national broadcasting network of each participating country must do everything in their power to maintain the contest as such. The thesis intends to demonstrate that the Eurovision Song Contest is not only an annual television event with the sole purpose of being a recreational entertainment program, but the contest also reflects both the cultural and political history of Europe. The main goal of the thesis is to look into how the manifestation of the political landscape of Europe emerges in Eurovision. The development of the contest between 1990 and 2019 gets reviewed with cases of political nature brought forward, on the one hand regarding how political events have affected it, and on the other hand regarding politically inclined incidents within the contest itself. The conclusions of the thesis indicate that the political landscape of Europe is indeed reflected in Eurovision, in particular the landscape of Eastern Europe where the collapse of Yugoslavia on the one and the Soviet Union, on the other hand, were very influential to the contest. Originally the purpose of Eurovision was to unite European nations after a long period of warfare through music. At the same time that emphasis is put on that the contest is altogether an unpolitical event, it is a platform for the multi-national community of Europe to reflect both their cultural and social characteristic features. Politics and the political environment is a prominent part of each society. As a result, it is practically impossible to exclude just as important societal aspects from a television event like the Eurovision Song Contest.
