  • This report is the authors‘ final project for a B.Ed.-degree in pedagogy at the University of Akureyri. Here we will discuss students with Arabic as their mother tongue in the Icelandic school system and their perspective within it. School culture differs between countries, and it is therefore important for those involved in the education of children of foreign origin to understand their experience of the school system. It can be crucial for those students to receive affection and understanding from the people who are there to accommodate them. Families who are forced to flee their homes do not have the same family network as they had in their country, and it can be difficult to face adversity from people of the new country instead of understanding. People who are forced to leave their country of origin are at a high risk of suffering from cultural shock in their new country. In this report, we discuss the five stages of cultural shock that newcomers may experience. The purpose of the final project is to prepare study material for Arabic-speaking students who are beginners in Icelandic. We decided to present the project in such a way that the material could be used within the school and at home. Students with Arabic as their mother tongue need to learn Latin letters that they are not necessarily accustomed to, and to write from left to right. However, the study material emphasizes the vocabulary that occurs at school, at home and outside. Language is the tool of mankind to communicate, and therefore students should be able to communicate easily after going through the chapters in this study material. Everything in the study material is translated into Arabic, which means that the students’ parents can help them with their homework and learn some Icelandic words along the way. It is also very graphic, as the students are at different levels academically and not everyone may be able to read Arabic. Some students with Arabic as their mother tongue have also never entered a school in their home country. That is why we strived to make the study material suitable for Arabic students with different abilities in Icelandic.
