The subject of this thesis is the effect that parents‘ digital media use has on parent-child interaction and attachment. The attachment that an infant forms with its parents affects its development and welfare. The first mother-infant attachment takes place while the infant is still in the womb. After the infant is born the mother strengthens the relationship, for example, by looking into its eyes and smile. It is important for mothers to be sensitive to the needs of their children but a mother who pays attention to her infant during the first months and learns to respond quickly and correctly to the signals given by the infant, forms a secure attachment with it. A child with a secure attachment style adapts better socially, has a better self-image and is better emotionally balanced than other children.
In recent years, the use of smart devices has increased significantly in the Western world and has become part of people's daily lives. As a result, interaction has changed and there are concerns about how it affects the attachment between parents and children. Recent studies indicate that parents are less sensitive to the needs of their children when they use their smartphones. They are less likely to make eye contact and less likely to respond to a child's bids for attention. Results also show that when the devices are used in the presence of children, interaction decreases, which can have a detrimental effect on their cognitive and emotional development. In addition, a link has been found between lack of interaction and behavioral problems in children.
In chapter four, results from an Icelandic study by Steingerður Ólafsdóttir (2017) are examined. She researched young children's use of smart devices and parents' attitudes. The results indicate that children start using devices, such as tablets, at a very young age. They also indicate increased and more diverse use of devices with increasing age.
The main purpose of this project is to draw the attention of parents and other caregivers to the effects that digital media use, especially the use of smart devices, may have on interaction and attachment with children. It is important that parents take the time to interact with their children without being disturbed by their smart phones or other digital media devices.
Keywords: attachment, parent-child interactions, maternal sensitivity, digital media use, smartphone use, young children
