  • The objective of this research is to investigate weaving in Iceland on the arrival of the first digital weaving loom to the country in 2016. For this purpose, a number of participants from the seminar ,,Umsýsla, meðferð og notkun á TC2 stafrænum vefstól“ (Attendance, application and usage of the Thread Control 2 digital loom) are interviewed but that seminar has been offered by the Icelandic Textile Center in Blöndós (Textilmiðstöð Íslands) on regular basis from its purchase to the center. The aim of this research is also to inform about weaving in Iceland with regard to 21st century policy of innovation and sustainability do not bring back the ideals of practical arts along with applied arts.
The premises are historical documents about weaving in Iceland and current weaving information along with the interviews. The weaver experience adds a colourful dimension to the research that ranges from the art handcraft weaving to specialized knowledge in textiles, graphic design and fashion design. This research is about weaving as it appears in historical documents and where it is coming forward after a long period of silence in the Icelandic weaving industry.
Findings indicate that the existence of a digital or wired loom has not deduced the interest in manual weaving as the usage of the loom requires some manual work itself, nor the artistic appreciation and evaluation. The biggest hope for innovation and sustainability in weaving is in ratio with band development of sustainability nature and innovations in the making and development of the yarn. The value of handcrafts is maintained because most of the interviewees are interested in one-of-a-kind productions. They think the digital loom is excellent for prototype making on the intent of manufacturing abroad. Interviewees liked most the picture weaving, Jacquard weaving technique and the autonomation of the vertical band. The most deducing fact regarding weaving on the loom was poor computer knowledge which was a problem with some of the participants. Interviewees would very much like to have a digitalized loom in the most populated part in Iceland to encourage weaving experiments.
