Ritgerðin segir frá starfendarannsókn sem unnin var í einni af þrem starfstöðum leikskólans Leikborgar. Hún snerist um að svara rannsóknarspurningum sem snúa að þátttöku 4-5 ára barna í matartíma í leikskóla. Leikskólinn hefur unnið eftir hugmyndafræði Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi um flæði (e. flow) síðan 2017. Tilgangurinn var að svara því hvernig ég sem kennari gat nýtt mér hugmyndir barnanna í að þróa áfram matstofu þar sem búið var að innleiða hlaðborð og flæðandi skipulag í matartímanum. Rannsóknarspurningarnar sem ég notaðist við voru þrjár. Hverjar eru hugmyndir barna um þátttöku sína í matartímanum í matstofu í leikskóla? Hvernig get ég nýtt hugmyndir barnanna í að þróa matstofuna áfram? og Styður flæði í matstofu við flæði í daglegu starfi?
Ég safnaði gögnum með rannsóknardagbók, vettvangsathugunum, viðtölum við börnin, viðtölum sem börnin tóku við hvort annað, myndbandsupptökum, ljósmyndum og með því að gera könnun meðal barnanna. Niðurstöðurnar sýndu skýrt að börnin vilja fá tækifæri til þess að fá að gera sjálf, fá að taka ákvörðun um hvaða mat af hlaðborðinu þau borða og að ákvörðunarréttur þeirra sé virtur. Um miðbik rannsóknarinnar voru settar á strangar reglur vegna Covid-19 og sýndu niðurstöður að börnin söknuðu þess að fá ekki að skammta sér sjálf. Einnig sýndu niðurstöðurnar að þau vilja fá að skreyta og gera huggulegt í kring um sig og mynda þannig kósí andrúmsloft. Þeim fannst mikilvægt að fá að velja sér sæti og með hverjum þau myndu matast með en gögnin sýndu að það hjálpaði til við að mynda vinatengsl sem héldu áfram í leiknum eftir matmálstímann. Verkefnið getur gagnast öðrum leikskólum sem vilja stunda lýðræðisleg vinnubrögð í samvinnu við börn og endurskoða matartímann sem oft á tíðum er kennarastýrð athöfn.

  • This master‘s thesis is based on action research conducted in one of three buildings of the preschool Leikborg. The focus is on answering research questions about the participation of 4-5-year-old children in mealtimes in preschool. The preschool has been working according to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's ideas of flow since 2017. The main research goal was to answer how I, as a teacher, could use the children's ideas to further develop a dining room where a buffet and fluent organization had been implemented during the mealtime. The research centers on three research questions. What are the children's ideas about participating in lunch time in a preschool dining room? How can I use the children's ideas to further develop the dining room? And does the flow in the dining room support the flow in daily work/play? I collected data by keeping a research diary, collecting field observations, interviewing the children, having the children interview each other, analyzing video recordings and photographs, and by surveying the children. My results show clearly that the children want to have the opportunity to do themself, to be able to decide what food from the buffet they decided to eat, and to have their choices respected by the staff. The study was interrupted by Covid-19, which introduced strict mealtime rules. This resulted in the children missing not being able to put food on their plate themselves. The results also show that the children want to decorate and create a cozy environment in their division. To this effect, they felt it was important to be able to choose whom to have share meals with, and being able to choose where to sit. The data also shows that having these choices helped the children form friendships that continued into play after mealtime. The project can benefit other preschools that want to engage children in democratic working methods around mealtimes, which traditionally is a teacher-led activity.
