Abstract

Þátttaka foreldra í íslenskunámi og lestrarþjálfun barna sinna er myndband og vefsíða, eitt af fjórum meistaraverkefnum undir regnhlífinni Tengjumst – kennarar og foreldrar barna af erlendum uppruna. Sameiginlegt markmið höfunda var að búa til fræðsluefni fyrir foreldra til þess að styrkja tengsl þeirra við grunnskóla, í þágu barnanna. Fræðslumyndböndin eru á arabísku, íslensku, pólsku og spænsku og eru birt á vefnum tengjumst.hi.is. Vefurinn geymir allar myndirnar ásamt ítarlegar upplýsingar um þátttöku foreldra í grunnskólastarfi á Íslandi.Markmið þessa verkefnis er að að fræða foreldra af erlendum uppruna um íslenskunám og lestrarþjálfun barna í grunnskólum á Íslandi. Byggt er á rannsóknum um innflytjendur hérlendis, íslenskunám barna af erlendum uppruna og tengsl heimila og skóla. Í myndbandinu er áhersla lögð á tungumálanám og orðaforðaþjálfun gegnum lestur barnabóka. Fjallað er um mikilvægi þess að foreldrar taki þátt í námi barna sinna til að stuðla að virku fjöltyngi þeirra, vellíðan og námsárangri. Þá er rætt um jákvæð áhrif þess að foreldrar lesi reglulega með börnum sínum, hlusti á þau lesa og ræði við þau um innihaldið. Efnið veitir foreldrum aðferðir til að styðja við tungumála- og lestrarnám barna sinna.Vinnan við þetta verkefni var einstaklega skapandi og skemmtileg. Í gegnum fjölbreytilegt vinnuferli fékk ég bæði tækifæri til sjálfstæðrar vinnu og samvinnu þar sem ég lærði af samnemendum, leiðbeinanda og öðrum þátttakendum. Þá áttaði ég mig á því að áhugi minn á innflytjendum og innflytjendabörnum fer sífellt vaxandi. Réttur innflytjendafjölskyldna til traustra upplýsinga um skólastarf er sá sami og annarra fjölskyldna og ég er ánægð með að verkefnið gefur foreldrum og börnum með fjölbreyttan tungumálabakgrunn tækifæri til að tengjast íslensku skólastarfi.Fræðslumyndbandið Þátttaka foreldra í íslenskunámi og lestrarþjálfun barna sinna er framleitt í samstarfi fjögurra meistaranema, leiðbeinanda þeirra, kvikmyndatökumanna af kennslusviði Háskóla Íslands, þýðenda og vina okkar sem léku í myndböndunum.

Parental participation in children´s language and reading practice is both a video and a website, and it is one of the four master theses that are part of a bigger project called Connect – teachers and parents of immigrant children. The goal of the project is to create educational material for parents that helps strengthen their connection with Icelandic primary schools, for the benefit of their children. The educational videos are made in four different languages: Arabic, Icelandic, Polish and Spanish, and they are published on the website tengjumst.hi.is. The videos can be found on the website, in addition to more detailed information about parental participation in Icelandic primary schools.This present thesis supports the educational material that was created. It helps the reader understand the research that was carried out on the subject and the methods used in the creative process. The author observed research results on immigrants in Iceland, Icelandic language practice of children with foreign roots as well as home-school relationships. In the video, she put emphasis on vocabulary and language practice through the reading of children´s books and on the importance of parental participation in their children´s education to contribute to active multilingualism. Furthermore, the importance of parents reading regularly with their children, listening to them and talking to them about the story, was discussed. The educational material developed in this work has given parents many tools to support their children´s language- and reading practices.The process of making the present research project was both creative and fun. Through a diverse and creative process, I got an opportunity to work both independently and as part of a team, where I learned from my fellow students, supervisor and other people involved. Through this work I have realised that my interest in immigrants and immigrant children keeps growing. I am happy to have been a part of this project which gives immigrant families the same opportunities as other families to connect to the Icelandic school system.The video, Parental participation in children´s language and reading practice, has been produced in collaboration of four master students, their supervisor, cinematographers from the University of Iceland, translators and friends that acted in the videos.
