In Kristján Eldjárn's book, Kuml of haugfé úr heiðnum sið á Íslandi, 101 spearheads are documented and presented. Out of those 101, only 40 have been given a confident typological assessment. Typological analysis of these spearheads was done using Jan Petersen's typology, published in his 1919 book, De norske vikingesverd. Our typological knowledge has increased since then, and that calls for a re-assessment of our knowledge of the spearheads found here.
The re-assessment was based primarily on two research questions:
•Are the 61 spearheads that are not previously given a typological assessment, identifiable?
•Is Petersen’s typology a good enough tool to analyse the remaining spearheads, or is there a need of an update or a new standard?
The re-assessment was made by creating a catalogue of the spearheads, that have not been given a typological assessment, and compare it to a newer typology to see if any new information or results could be ascertained.
