In the heyday of the Crusades, around 1200, reports of armed pilgrimages to the Holy Land also appear in Old Norse literature. Most of them exist in the context of one of the main medieval norse chronicles, which is why they have mostly been analyzed within the context of Old Norse literature. However, the main object of this work, the Historia de Profectione Danorum in Hierosolymam, consciously places itself in the tradition of Latin European crusade literature. Based on this, one can also look at those other sources in terms of what the Norse perspective on such journeys was, and how it differed from the "typical" Latin European one. One of the main concerns of the sources seems to be to define the place of Scandinavian culture and kingdoms in the greater European structure, on the one hand by adopting some elements of Latin European culture, but on the other hand also by deliberately distinguishing and emphasizing pieces of Norse identity.
