Degree:
  • Master's
Abstract:

  • Background: Daughters are the primary source of support for older parents living in a nursing home. The mother-daughter relationship is usually exceptionally close and has an impact on their whole life course. Research is lacking on the development of this relationship after the mothers' transition to a nursing home.
Aim: To explore daughters’ experiences of having a mother in a nursing home, its impact on the maternal relationship, and the daughters' need for education and support.
Method: The Vancouver School's interpretive phenomenology was used. The participants were 12 women who had mothers living in a nursing home. Data were collected through 21 semistructured individual interviews, one or two with each participant.
Results: The main theme, Keeping the relationship alive with tender care and common sense, was central to the daughters' experience. It was divided into five themes, of which the first one described the daughters' efforts to maintain the relationship that had changed due to the mother's degeneration. It was characterized by relationship quality and loss and grief. The second theme outlined responsibility and a sense of duty towards the mother, of which role change was one manifestation. A feeling of relief after the mother moved into the safety of the nursing home was expressed in the third theme, whereas the fourth one named the confidence that the mother's needs were fulfilled and the importance of both respectful communication with the mother and her well-being. In the last theme, the limited education and support the daughters received from professionals in the nursing home was described while needs for education varied and most of them relied on their common sense.
Conclusions: Daughters strive to maintain close relationships with their mothers in nursing homes and learn to accept their deterioration predominantly on their own. They could benefit from increased support and education of health-care professionals.
Keywords: Mother-daughter relationship, women, emotions, informal care, family participation, nursing homes, education, support, phenomenology, purposive sampling
