In this thesis, I will be looking at Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Trilogy through the lens of Vladimir Propp, and attempting to prove that Mistborn: the Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages are at their very core structured like folktales, as folktales are defined by Vladimir Propp in his book: Morphology of the Folktale. In order to do this, I will be identifying Propp’s various character functions as they appear throughout the trilogy, and then I will reduce each book down to a formula of Proppian letter designations. Those formulae will stand as proof that Sanderson’s Mistborn Trilogy can, based on their structure, be considered a Proppian folktale.
