The goal of this thesis is to analyze the ethics behind the use of microtransactions in video games and to understand how this monetization method affects gamers. Microtransactions are a highly controversial topic in the gaming community as there are some concerns that this type of monetization may be exploitative, unethical, and not in the best interest of the players. Microtransaction is a term that is used for micro-payments that allow gamers to pay real money for an in-game item or perk. The most controversial types of microtransactions are loot boxes. These boxes generally include a random or partially random assortment of items. Some of these items are more desirable than others because of their rarity or power. In many cases, the implementation of loot boxes can resemble gambling-like mechanics and imagery. While microtransactions are extremely profitable for video game companies they can be very damaging because of this reason, especially to vulnerable individuals.
One of the intentions of this discussion is to shed a light on the fact that these monetization tactics are far from “ethical and fun“, contrary to what some video game publishers may suggest, and that they need some kind of swift intervention from the authorities. After looking at how these companies implement microtransactions, especially loot boxes, it is clear that they are not ethical. This monetization method is exploitative, manipulative, and predatory. Regardless of that, it is evident that microtransactions are not going anywhere. They are way too profitable for companies and fundamentally the role of a business is to make a profit. The only thing that can make them disappear from games is if they become completely illegal. Currently, only a couple of countries have determined that microtransactions are in violation of their gambling laws, and then only in the form of loot boxes. The only thing that players can do is to vote with their wallets and stop supporting companies that rely heavily on microtransactions.
