  • Rannsóknir hérlendis sem erlendis sýna að traust til lögreglu mælist alla jafna minnst meðal ungs fólks á aldrinum 18 til 25 ára. Í fyrri rannsóknum hefur ungt fólk auðkennt að samskipti þeirra við lögregluna hafi mest áhrif á viðhorf þeirra og traust til hennar. Þá getur eitt tilfelli þar sem ungt fólk upplifir ósanngjarna meðferð eða framkomu lögreglumanna haft neikvæð áhrif á upplifun þeirra á lögreglunni almennt. Í þessari ritgerð er leitast við að kanna viðhorf og traust ungs fólks á Íslandi til lögreglunnar og varpa ljósi á hvað veldur því að ungt fólk treystir lögreglunni síður en þeir sem eldri eru. Rannsóknarspurningin sem við leitum svara við er eftirfarandi: Hvaða áhrif hafa fyrri samskipti ungs fólks við lögreglumenn á viðhorf og traust þeirra til lögreglunnar? Rannsóknarspurningunni var svarað á grundvelli megindlegra spurningalistagagna sem safnað var með netkönnun sem lögð var fyrir á vordögum 2022 (n=467). Helstu niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar eru þær að ungt fólk á aldrinum 18 til 25 ára treystir lögreglunni almennt vel og hefur jákvætt viðhorf til stofnunarinnar þó að traustið og viðhorfið mælist ekki jafn gott og meðal almennings í öðrum könnunum. Enn fremur sýna niðurstöðurnar að samskipti við lögreglumenn hafi, eftir eðli samskiptanna, bæði jákvæð og neikvæð áhrif á viðhorf ungs fólks til lögreglunnar og að aukin afskipti leiði til neikvæðara viðhorfs. Niðurstöðurnar gefa ágætis mynd af viðhorfum ungs fólks til lögreglunnar hér á landi og undirstrika mikilvægi þess að þetta viðfangsefni verði kannað nánar í formi eigindlegra rannsókna og viðtala svo kafa megi dýpra ofan í hvað skýrir minna traust og neikvæðara viðhorf til lögreglu meðal ungs fólks.

Research in Iceland and internationally shows that trust in the police is generally lowest among young people between the ages of 18 and 25. In previous studies, young people have identified that previous interactions with the police have the most impact on their attitudes and trust in the police. Moreover, even a single incident where young people experience unfair treatment or attitude by police officers can negatively shape their views of the police in general. This thesis seeks to examine the attitudes and trust of young people in Iceland towards the police and shed light on what makes young people to trust the police less than those who are older. The research question we seek to answer is as follows: What effect do young people's interactions with police officers have on their attitudes and trust towards the police? The research question was answered on the basis of quantitative questionnaire data collected with an online survey fielded in the spring of 2022 (n=467). The main results show that young people between the ages of 15 and 25 generally trust the police and have a positive attitude towards the institution, even though their trust and attitude is not as positive as among the general public in other surveys. Furthermore, the results show that interactions with police officers, depending on their nature, have both positive and negative effects on young people's attitudes towards the police and that increased police interventions lead to a more negative attitude. The results demonstrate young people’s views and attitudes in Iceland and highlight the importance of examining this issue further with in-depth qualitative research and interviews so that we can delve deeper into what explains lower trust and more negative attitudes towards the police among young people.
