Closed body and dotted self examines my art practices and my thoughts in the context of the relationship between the physical body and the self/individual. I have observed and followed how the surroundings relate to my physicality and thinking, and how these relate to changes in my own art practice and process. I have been observing and collecting ideas about the form and function of objects and their relation to time and space. Shifting the focus of my thoughts to the body led me to see how my thoughts and how my body changed, or how I recognized that it had changed. In this thesis, I first focus on the body as a medium, and on the inner and outer being of the body and the reasons for their existence. Then I concentrate on the public and the self/individual with an awareness of the gap between the two. I pursue how the formation of the self/individual is elastic and flexible. I also discuss mimesis and sympathetic magic, while incorporating my own background in Japanese thought and aesthetic values, namely with the terms ‘climate’ and ‘Mono no aware.’ I have also done research into the work of Katinka Bock, an artist who deals with objects and physicality, and Lygia Clark, an artist who worked in the field of art as a form of therapy and change.
