Transmission lines are an essential part of the power system. Overhead transmission lines are completely exposed to the harsh environment and a leading cause of power outages can be related weather events and 18% are a result of extreme cold weather conditions. A special threat to overhead transmission lines in snow storms is ice accretion that forms around the conductor. The increased weight can lead to conductors breaking down or even the tower or poles to buckle under the sheer weight of the ice. The aim of this thesis is to show how modern surveillance equipment can be used to extract speci c parameters and can be used to determine the weight of the ice and it’s diameter. With the knowledge of the ice volume, a current can be determined so Joule heating can be implemented to de-ice the conductor. Since
there have been advancement in conductors a comparison will be made between a classical ACSR conductor and a ACCR High temperature low sag conductor
