Mining of metals and minerals is considered essential for modern life, as raw materials are the foundation of contemporary modern society. Mining operations can cause extreme community disruption and negative environmental impacts. The extraction of resources in many mining areas has led to mining-induced displacement and resettlement (MIDR). Physical relocation, displacement and resettlement are widely recognized as significant risk contributors to people’s lives. Researchers in the field of development-induced displacement and resettlement (DIDR) have stated that the knowledge of the impacts of MIDR is poor. Consequently, the aim of this thesis is to examine the documented social and economic impacts people face when it comes to the relocation of people due to large-scale mining, as well as why relocation events take place. Furthermore, the aim is to theorize about climate-induced relocation based on the findings of the study. A two-step interpretation method was adapted to the context of this thesis where multiple cases of relocated communities were examined. The results reveal that the main reasons for relocation are connected to mining discoveries, expansions or environmental damages. The majority of economic and social impacts on people were distinctly negative. The reasons for, and impacts of, mining-induced relocation were summarized graphically as a lesson for climate-induced relocation. They can be considered as practical knowledge to reduce the negative impacts, for the mining sector to improve operations, and for policy implications for governments, specifically of resource-rich countries and countries vulnerable to climate hazards.
