According to Luigi et al., after decades of diminished interest in organizational design there is a certain “renaissance” in the field (Luigi et al., 2021). The basic concept of the organizational life cycle (OLC) model is a set of sequential phases organizations go through during their lifespan (Lester et al., 2008; Luigi et al., 2021; Phelps et al., 2007) and can be used as a tool for assessing the maturity level of the organization (Kuzmin, 2017). As the stages are pre-determined and prescriptive they are also a potential forecasting tool (Schwenker & Müller-Dofel, 2013), giving managers a prediction for what strategic decisions to make to move the business toward increased growth and maturity (Lester et al., 2003). Many researchers have pointed out limitations of the traditional OLC and its reliability when it comes to challenges in today ́s business environment (Lester et al., 2003, 2008; Luigi et al., 2021; Phelps et al., 2007; Schwenker & Müller-Dofel, 2013). Speed, adaptation, and agility are concepts more likely to support the success of organizations today when not just growing is essential but having flexibility to adapt to ever changing environment and right-sizing is as important.
