This thesis examines how the essay; The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction written by Walter Benjamin is relative to our usage of Social Media Networks such as: Facebook and Instagram. The research questions for this thesis are; How are Walter Benjamin´s ideas of reproduction relative to our usage of social media? How do our social media streams impact our sense of self? These questions explore how reproduction manufactures our human nature and how it effects the art of being. These are my summaries of the key concepts of Walter Benjamin; The Aura of Authenticity is how we keep the essence of time alive within us. The Cult Value is how time slows down within us and how that relates to tradition, history and ritual. The Exhibition Value allows us to be seen, the speed of which we can now reproduce an image across the globe can be reached in an instant. The Shock Effect reflects our reality as the social media stream triggers emotions that coalesce with our need of belonging. Studies examined in this thesis show how this cultivates anxiety and disillusionment. The Cult of Personality is our escape from having to be, now we can create the illusion of our online personas and become influencers. As long as our phones stay alive, we do not have to pay attention to the art of being. Crowded social media streams create continuous cycles, an incessant need to represent our self in order to find our self, only to find our sense of self lost in an algorithm, pushing us to reproduce our self yet again. The illusion of escape is captured in an image as the all-seeing eye of the digital age is bewildered by the vast amount of information that we compulsively scroll through.
