Abstract

líkami, kjarrblámi is an artistic research project that explores music improvisation and experimentation from many different angles. It finds grounding and structure within text and language, all the while acknowledging and working through the ambiguities that unavoidably entails. The point of view of a classically trained vocalist expanding her practice takes precedence, building on the experiences of more than a decade of voice and performance training. From this angle, the performing body becomes the moment-to-moment intersection of music, language, and meaning, grounded in the cultivation of awareness and listening. This written report puts the original performance project in context and dives into the experiential, material, and music historical aspects of the making of a performance. The curatorial methods typically available to the classical performer are amalgamated with the various methods and tools of experimental music practice in an attempt to explore what makes improvisational live music performances uniquely worthwhile. Structure and form in music are connected to the body of the music performer, emphasising the importance of free improvisation and exploration for performers in finding agency in their music-making, no matter what kind. The role of the musical score is discussed as an ephemeral object taking the role of an experimental tool for acting out processes, as well as being put in historical context as a tool for consolidating power. Conclusions do not become specific or goal-orientated but focus on strengthening connections between people and practices.
