Abstract

In the district planning from 2021 for energy production and industry in the municipalities Reykjanesbær and Grindavík in Reykjanes, industrial zone D is defined as a site for energy production and research. At the site, HS Orka has proposed a plan for a green industrial Resource Park. The goal is to create a community with cluster of businesses, where waste becomes value and furthermore supports circular economy. The goal of my thesis research is to assess what it there and how architecture can increase its awareness. The site is listed on the Natural Heritage Register of Iceland. Furthermore, Reykjanes Peninsula is a UNESCO Global Geopark defined as a single, unified geographical area of international geological significance. Reykjanes has extensive history, archeological heritage, and is a natural habitat for multiple species. My thesis design project is an awareness center situated within the proposed Resource Park by HS Orka. The center will focus on fostering awareness, knowledge and understanding of the natural environment, preserving of existing conditions, the benefits of renewable energy and the concept of green industrial parks. The center will tell a story of harvesting geothermal energy, nature, and heritage on different scales.
