A case study on implementation of hybrid software development process

Abstract

Software development is complex and constantly changing, necessitating ongoing modification to satisfy the demands of various stakeholders. In recent years, a hybrid software development process has been developed as a way to integrate components from other processes to enhance product quality and boost productivity. The case study in this thesis examines the benefits and challenges of implementing a hybrid software development method in a controlled setting. The study addresses four research questions, these are; RQ1.) What has necessitated the combination of different elements/practices from multiple software development processes? RQ2.) How does the introduction of a hybrid process affect the quality of the delivered product? RQ3.) What are the views and sentiments of employees towards such a hybrid process? RQ4.) How can customers/users be part of the process? Data was collected through a combination of qualitative and quantitative including interviewee interviews at different stages of the development process and a study of metrics from GitHub and Jama Software. The study highlights the importance of clear and measurable requirements, collaboration among stakeholders, and adequate testing to ensure the quality of the final product in a hybrid software development process. The research is beneficial to employees and companies that have a system in place with processes that need to be followed to deal with requirements and tasks. Also beneficial for companies that have requirements created by other people than the ones that will be responsible to develop them, since that can lead to requirements being complicated or too simple.
