Abstract

Markmið rannsóknarinnar er að skoða gnostíska trú og trúarhreyfingar í frumkristni og leitast við að skilja annars vegar hvers vegna hún hvarf af sjónarsviðinu og hins vegar að spyrja hvort hún hafi í raun lifað af og birtist okkur í nýaldartrú samtímans. Á fyrstu öldum eftir krist, á mótunarárum kristinnar trúar, var tekist á um hina réttu kristnu trú. Í trúvarnarritum kirkjufeðra og for-rétttrúnaðarmanna eru heimildir um að kristnir menn hafi tekist á innbyrðis og við kirkjufeður og um hina réttu trú andspænis villutrú. Í ritinu Adversus Haereses (180 e. kr.) eftir Irenaeus kirkjuföður er að finna frásagnir af kristnum gnostum sem boðuðu nýjan mannskilning á tilvistarlegum grunni þar sem rætur manneskjunnar megi rekja til yfirskilvitlegs raunveruleika. Þetta viðhorf til mannskilnings ógnaði ríkjandi stigveldi samfélagsins. Gnostísk útgáfa af kristinni trú ógnaði hinu kirkjulega valdi sem for-rétttrúnaðar menn stóðu vörð um og fólk var jafnvel drepið fyrir að halda fram þeirri „villutrú“ sem þó virðist byggja á kristnum gildum. The aim of the study is to examine Gnostic religion and religious movements in early Christianity and strive to understand on the one hand why it disappeared from the scene and on the other hand to ask if it actually survived and appears to us in contemporary New Age religion. The following study will try to shed light on the cultural environment of the Gnostics and their revolutionary existential ideas and whether the Gnostic school was really a counterculture that was crushed by the ruling church in the 4th. century. Elaine Pagels has tried to analyze the social environment of the Gnostics and the threat posed by their transcendence God who was accessible to everyone without the involvement of a priest or pope. Pagel's theories will be supported. April deConnick's research and theories about the counterculture of gnosis, which she believes reappeared in New Age movements in the West in the 20th century, are also taken into account. That part of the research is based on conversations with several people who have chosen to go on psychedelic trips and are tempted to find spiritual healing through those trips.
