Bréf til mömmu: Íslenskar þjóðsögur og ævintýri í gegnum linsu sjálfs-etnógrafíu

Abstract

Þessi ritgerð fjallar um hlutverk frásagnarlistarinnar sem brúar milli menningarheima, með áherslu á tengsl Litháens og Íslands. Með því að skoða íslenskar þjóðsögur og ævintýri er kafað ofan í menningarlega þýðingu þessara frásagna og dregið fram hvernig þær endurspegla hefðir, miðla siðferðilegum álitamálum og dýpka skilning á menningarbundum viðhorfum. Höfundur sækir í brunn þjóðsagna úr safni Jóns Árnasonar og rannsakar þá menningartúlkun og félagslegu sjálfsmynd sem felst í þessum sögum. Með því að beita sjálfs-etnógrafíu (e. auto-ethnography) sem aðferð kannar ritgerðin einnig persónulega reynslu höfundar í félagslegu og menningarlegu samhengi beggja menningarheima. Kjarni verkefnisins liggur í þeirri skapandi vegferð að skrifa átta bréf til móður höfundar á einu ári, sem bjóða lesendum í ferðalag milli tveggja menningarheima og sýna kraft frásagna til að efla tengsl og skilning.

This essay explores the profound role of storytelling as a bridge between cultures, focusing on the connection between Lithuania and Iceland. Through an examination of Icelandic legends and fairy tales, the study delves into the cultural significance of these narratives, highlighting their ability to preserve traditions, convey moral guidance, and deepen understanding of cultural ethos. Drawing inspiration from Jón Árnason's collection of Icelandic folktales, the author investigates the cultural interpretation and social identity embedded within these stories. Using auto-ethnography as a method, the thesis also explores the personal experiences of the author within the social and cultural contexts of both cultures. The heart of the project lies in the creative pursuit of composing eight letters to the author's mother, written over the course of a year, which invite readers on a journey between two cultures, showcasing the power of storytelling to foster connection and understanding.
