This thesis explored that tectonics, one of the essential questions of architecture, is able to be a tool positively joining the design process and responding to special design intentions. After the industrial revolution, technologies and materials were upgraded with great strides in architecture. Then Le Corbusier created the domino system in the early 20th century, with a profound impact on modern architecture whether in physical or conceptual aspects. The system is pure and effective in freeing the ground floor, the plan, the façade and the form itself.
However, it becomes a distinction between the Domino system and pre-modern architecture, which were style-dependent. Even style still exists in modern architecture but it is not related to tectonic anymore instead particular isms due to the born of this efficient structure system. In order to explore architectural tectonic as a key in the design process, the comb of tectonic theories provides a conceptual framework for a contemporary interpretation of tectonic meaning in architecture. Kenneth Frampton, Karl Bötticher and Gottfried Semper are the persons who develop the meaning and the tectonic potential of architecture. Until today, the tectonic theory is a comprehensive philosophy that investigates the relationships formed between design, structure, construction and space, while creating or experiencing architectural works.
Valerio Olgiati is one of the most representative Swiss architects of the new generation, challenging the traditional building system and emphasising the importance of tectonics in their projects. The purpose to introduce Valerio Olgiati’s Non-Referential Architecture and analysis of the tectonic expression from his work is to find out his special and unique pursuit for tectonics and reveal it as an architecture tool instead of being a mere constructional means for design end. Contradiction is a vital point through its creed and its concrete architectural principles. He puts the main effort into the tectonic expression to realize contradiction by creating unique structures systems, openings, columns and materials.
This study attempts to deconstruct his works to conclude Valerio Olgiati ‘s contradictional tectonic expressions.
Keywords: tectonic, non-referential architecture, contradiction, Valerio Olgiati, structure, construction
