Few people have delved deeply into the ritual usage of bronze lurs from the Nordic Bronze Age, especially in the past thirty years. The lurs have almost exclusively been found in pairs, and this dualism has often only been connected with an ox cult without further explanation. They have rarely been contextualised with other cultic objects found in pairs or the general dualism that defines the Nordic Bronze Age.
Another pervasive thing in the Nordic Bronze Age is the sun, both as a depiction and as a stylised decoration on objects, the lurs included. Many have seen this as an indication of a potential sun cult.
Building on new research, notably by Kristian Kristiansen and Flemming Kaul, the lurs can be put into a broader context, of dualism in Bronze Age culture and a potential sun cult.
