As any Indigenous representative, whose land is still in a colonial state, I often try to figure out how can I decolonize myself? How can I preserve my heritage? In this thesis I explore the notion of Indigenous Knowledge, which consists of two important parts: animistic view of the world and ritualistic practices. Indigenous Knowledge is a collection of inherited lessons, which are passed down from one generation to another. Such knowledge sees personhood in the surrounding environment. Along with humans and animals, everything else has a soul or a spirit inside. Just as we communicate with words or gestures, they possess their own language practices. With such knowledge an Indigenous person from my land experiences a holistic coexistence with their environment. Such a person engages and establishes a relationship with trees, plants, rivers and spirits that reside in the area. The ritualistic part of Indigenous Knowledge brings in the practical aspect of the culture. With respect to nature, one can practice rituals to elevate their relationship with the surroundings or establish a connection with those who are not seen with the human eye, like spirits. In this thesis I attempt to bring my heritage and culture into my curatorial practice, when I work with space. I explore the potential coexistence of such Indigenous Knowledge with the artistic endeavors. Additionally, I wish to experiment and see if such knowledge could be used by others and practiced by people from other cultures. The theoretical concept of Indigenous Knowledge is carried out through the exhibition making process and curatorial work for the upcoming exhibition “Kindred”. In accordance to the culmination of this research a list of actions was developed and will be utilized in my curatorial methodology of this exhibition.
