Mannfræðilegar nálganir á körlum og vinnumenningu í hnattrænu norðri

Abstract

Í þessari bakkalárritgerð er fjallað um karlmennsku í tengslum við atvinnu og vinnumenningu í mannfræðilegu samhengi. Sjónum er beint að því hvernig verkaskipting og samfélagsleg staða móta karlmennsku ímyndir og hvaða áhrif vinnuumhverfi hefur á uppbyggingu og framkvæmd karlmennsku. Með því að greina etnógrafíur frá lok 20. aldar mun ég skoða hvernig karlmennska birtist og hvað þessar birtingarmyndir geta sagt okkur um karlmennsku samtímans. Sérstök áhersla er lögð á fjölbreytileika karlmennskunnar og hvernig hún mótast eftir þáttum eins og stétt, aldri, staðsetningu og menningu. Þá er einnig fjallað um hvernig vald og hvernig félagsleg norm spila inn í viðhald ráðandi karlmennsku ímynda og kynjaðra hlutverka. Ég fjalla um hvernig valdbeiting fer fram og hvað gerist þegar karlmenn missa stöðu sína þegar þeir uppfylla ekki væntingar samfélags. Einnig er dregið fram hvernig karlmennska getur þróast í gegnum skemmtun og samveru sem mótvægi við streitu og álag í atvinnulífi. Markmiðið er að varpa ljósi á hvernig þessi fyrirbæri fléttast saman og hvernig karlmennska er alltaf framkvæmd innan samfélagslegra kerfa eins og atvinnu sem bæði mótar karlmennsku og takmarkar hana.

This bachelor’s thesis explores masculinity in relation to work and workplace culture within an anthropological approach. The focus is on how the division of labor and social status shape masculine identities and how work environments influence the formation and performance of masculinity. By examining ethnographies from the late 20th century I aim is to understand how masculinity appears at the time and what these representations can reveal about masculinity in the present day. Special attention is given to the diversity of masculinities and how they are shaped by factors such as class, age, location, and culture. The thesis also discusses how power and social norms contribute to the maintenance of dominant masculine ideals and gender roles. I examine how power is exercised and what happens when men lose their social standing by failing to meet societal expectations. I will also discuss the development of masculinity through leisure and social bonding as a response to the stress and pressures of working life. The goal is to shed light on how these phenomena are interwoven and how masculinity is always performed within social frameworks, such as through employment which both shape and constrain it.
