From sea to society : tracing the ecosystem services flow from coastal and marine biodiversity in the trilateral Wadden Sea

Abstract

This thesis explores how marine and coastal biodiversity in the Trilateral Wadden Sea provides ecosystem services that flow from the natural environment to society and thus contribute to human wellbeing. Through an extensive integrative review of both grey and academic literature, I identify and describe 26 distinct ecosystem services and 11 disservices directly or indirectly linked to biodiversity. I analyse a wide range of natural and anthropogenic factors that influence the provisioning and flow of these services, including synergies and trade-offs between services, drivers of and threats to flow, and the elements of the ecosystem service cascade model that connect ecological processes with societal values. Finally, I visualize these flows conceptually and spatially to illustrate the interconnectedness and complexity of ecosystem service provisioning in coastal and marine contexts. Together, these steps help clarify and effectively communicate the multifaceted role of biodiversity in this unique intertidal system, providing insights for conservation efforts and informed ecosystem-based management in the Wadden Sea.

Þessi ritgerð kannar hvernig líffræðilegur fjölbreytileiki sjávar og stranda í Þríhliða Vaðhafinu veitir vistkerfisþjónustur sem flæða frá náttúrulegu umhverfi til samfélags og stuðla þannig að velsæld manna. Með ítarlegri heildstæðri rýni á bæði gráum og fræðilegum heimildum, greini ég og lýsi 26 aðgreindum vistkerfisþjónustum og 11 neikvæðum vistkerfisþáttum sem beint eða óbeint tengjast líffræðilegum fjölbreytileika. Ég greini vítt svið náttúrulegra og manngerðra þátta sem hafa áhrif á veitingu og flæði þessara þjónustuþátta, þar á meðal samlegðaráhrif og fórnarkostnað milli þjónustu, hvata og ógna fyrir flæði, og þætti í fosslíkaninu sem tengir vistfræðileg ferli við samfélagsleg gildi. Að lokum myndgeri ég þessi flæði bæði hugmyndafræðilega og rúmlega til að sýna fram á samtengingu og flækjustig vistkerfisþjónustu í samhengi stranda og sjávar.
