Police officers are exposed to highly strenuous, harsh, and frightful conditions. Exposure to potentially traumatic life events can take a toll on their mental health, however, increased social support from colleagues may reduce the likelihood of post-traumatic stress developing. Aims for the current study were to examine the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Icelandic police officers and its relationship with life events experienced and perceived social support from co-workers. The sample consisted of 231 police officers, 79.1% male and 20.9% female. PTSD, life events experienced, and perceived social support were measured with self-report questionnaires. Results indicate that 16% of police officers meet criteria for PTSD. Those with high levels of social support from colleagues were less likely to meet the criteria for PTSD or 7.1% compared to 26.4% among those with low levels of social support. Negative life events were not related to PTSD symptoms. Main finding was that high perceived social support was significantly related to lower PTSD symptoms regardless of whether the police officers had experienced negative life events.
Keywords: PTSD, life events, social support, police officers, post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • Lögreglumenn lenda oft í erfiðum og krefjandi aðstæðum þar sem þeir eru oftar en ekki berskjaldaðir. Þessar aðstæður geta tekið toll af geðheilsu þeirra. Í slíkum aðstæðum gæti stuðningur frá vinnufélögum skipt miklu máli og gæti minnkað líkurnar á áfallastreituröskun (e. PTSD). Markmið rannsóknarinnar var að kanna tíðni PTSD hjá íslenskum lögreglumönnum og tengsl við áföll upplifuð yfir ævina og skynjaðan félagsstuðning frá vinnufélögum. Samtalst tóku 231 lögreglumaður þátt í rannsókninni, 79,1% karlar og 20,9% konur. PTSD, áföll upplifuð yfir ævina og stuðningur frá vinnufélögum, voru mæld með sjálfsmats spurningarlista. Niðurstöðurnar gáfu til kynna að 16% lögreglumanna náðu greiningarviðmiði fyrir PTSD. Þar að auki, 26,4% þeirra sem skynjuðu lítinn stuðning frá félögum náðu greiningarviðmiðinu fyrir PTSD og 19,4% þeirra sem höfðu upplifað eitt eða fleiri áföll yfir ævina. Helstu niðurstöður voru þær að því hærri skynjaður stuðningur frá vinnufélögum því lægri voru einkenni PTSD sama hvort lögreglumenn höfðu upplifað áföll yfir ævina eða ekki.
Lykilhugtök: Áfallastreituröskun, áföll upplifuð yfir ævina, félagsstuðningur, lögreglumenn.
