  • Mental health is in our thoughts, feelings and how we affiliate with other people. Anyone can suffer from symptoms of mental problems and in excess of quarter of western countries populations are believed to fights this disease. In Iceland every fourth or fifth person is expected to experience symptoms of mental disorder at some time in their life.
This paper is based on references and it’s aims are to highlight the main mental illness that inmates suffer from, capture the relevant problems and define the illness. Additionally, to identify the main resources that exists within prisons and as well in the community for this specific group of clients. Research questions that will be put forward are to check connection between certain mental disorders and criminal behavior, and whether the resources in the community and in prisons are adequate for this specific group of offenders.
These papers primary conclusions are that the main mentally disorders, according to studies, that increase impact on criminal behavior are schizophrenia, depression and personality disorders. It is estimated that 10-15% of inmates in prisons around the world, suffer from severe mental disorders. Also, research showed a link between the incidence of psychiatric admissions and the number of persons in prisons. When psychiatric hospitalizations increased, the number of prisoners in prisons decreased and vise versa. Repeated offences, from these offenders are a fact and resources for this type of individuals in prisons are very poor as well after the redemption is finished.
