Íslenskur markaður þykir of lítill svo arðbært sé fyrir listastofnanir að sérhæfa sig fyrir afmarkaða hópa.

  • The competitive environment for arts institutions has changed in the last decades due to increased technology and home entertainment. The conversion between various art forms has resulted in high culture adapting to popular culture and vice versa which requires a revaluation of the target market and competition. There are concerns that the Icelandic market for the arts is already saturated. Harpa concert hall gives the motivation to evaluate whether it is possible to expand or exploit the target markets further. Guided by previous marketing studies on the marketing concept, STP marketing and branding, it will be attempted to determine in which areas improvements can be made. With qualitative and quantitative methods it will be examined how well Icelandic arts institutions are utilising marketing strategies? What image they are portraying and to whom? The main conclusions indicate that the marketing concept can be further implemented in arts institutions. Marketing is still primarily considered as a method of selling amongst managers of the arts which indicates that managers‘ realisation of the term may be too narrow. A redefinition of the marketing concept amongst art managers could possibly widen their understanding so that it would be considered more as a furthering concept. In a small market like Iceland it is not concidered profitable to specialise for defined groups. Therefore it is concidered necessary to tend to the market as a whole with varied programme offering. That is why STP marketing has not been exercised. Branding is not considered applicable to the arts apart from perception but branding is thought to raise ethical questions about marketing methods. The conclusion of this research therefore implies that there is still latitude to further the marketing concept within arts institutions and to adapt marketing strategies in order to expand and exploit the target markets for a large concert hall like Harpa.
