Greind eru verkin Get Out eftir Jordan Peele, sem er hryllingsmynd frá 2017, og gjörningurinn The Interrogation of Sandra Bland eftir Mojisola Adebayo sem sýndur var í Bush Theatre í London á viðburðinum Black Lives Black Words í mars 2017.

In this essay the works of two directors who work with different mediums are compared through an analysis of the subject and methods of the Black Lives Matter movement. Directors and writers Mojisola Adebayo (Nigeria/United Kingdom, b. 1968) and Jordan Peele (United States, b. 1979) take on the subjects of the Black Lives Matter movement, which started in the United States in 2012. The two directors come from distinct backgrounds and speak into different contexts, while fighting for a similar cause through their work. The question of how activism in the form of social performativity creates a stage is looked at in relation to the works of Peele and Adebayo, and how they situate themselves within that context. Peele’s horror film Get Out and the performance The Interrogation of Sandra Bland by Adebayo, both from 2017, are analysed and their methods in capturing the audience’s attention are compared. Their works are explored through the theories and writings of Augusto Boal on the practical uses of theatre in a social context, and Rebecca Solnit’s writing on the role of hope in social activism. We look at how the works mirror the methods of the Black Lives Matter movement in gaining an audience and engaging the public; how they use storytelling and narrative to awaken empathy and their use of symbolic gestures to present ideas of alternative realities.
