Although most would consider music to be a large part of their lives, one could maintain that music is a crucial element to actively pursue and use throughout the human lifespan. From infancy through childhood and the teenage years, adulthood, and finally, old age, the impact and the possibilities music has in each individual life is almost immeasurable. From early connections between a baby and its parents to the rehabilitation of an Alzheimer’s patient, music has proven itself to work wonders on and in the human brain. In this essay I will consider some of the important factors and research done in this field of study and examine the biological effects which take place in the human brain when exposed to music. Various diseases, both mental and physical ailments, and people’s intellect, can and have been influenced by music. Music is stored in such a way that the brain can access it by bypassing seemingly lost connections. The benefits of music education will also be discussed.
