Háskólinn á Hólum Dagmar Svanhvít Ingvadóttir 1962- Ragnheiður Traustadóttir 1966- Samningurinn um verndun menningar- og náttúruarfleifðar heimsins var samþykktur á allsherjarþingi UNESCO þann 16. nóvember 1972 fyrir40 árum síðan. Aðildarríki samningsins taka höndum saman um að vernda og hlúa að arfleifð heimsins, lýsa yfir sameiginlegri ábyrgð og skuldbinda sig til að varðveita arfleifðina fyrir komandi kynslóðir. Að mati UNESCO hafa staðir á heimsminjaskrá mikið aðdráttarafl og eru meðal fjölsóttustu ferðamannastaða heimsins. Telja samtökin að ferðaþjónusta sem rekin er á grundvelli sjálfbærrar þróunar hafi möguleika til tekjuöflunar sem gagnast getur við verndun heimsminjastaða, lagt sitt af mörkum til að bæta lífskjör íbúa nærsamfélagsins ásamt því að auka vitund gesta um gildi minjanna. Íslenskar torfbyggingar ásamt tengdu búsetulandslagi eru á yfirlitsskrá sem fyrirhuguð tilnefning á heimsminjaskrá. Yfirlitsskráin mótar stefnu innan hvers ríkis með hliðsjón af verndun, kynningarstarfi og ferðaþjónustu. UNESCO hvetur aðildarríki samningsins til að vinna skrána með þátttöku hagsmunaaðila eins og sveitastjórna, nærsamfélagsins og frjálsra félagasamtaka. Torfbyggingarnar eru kórónan í íslenskum byggingararfi, lýsa menningarlegum gildum samfélagsins ásamt félags- og tæknilegum breytingum sem átt hafa sér stað í gegnum aldirnar. Því er ljóst að þessar byggingar eru áþreifanlegar minjar um óáþreifanleg menningarverðmæti sem liggja í þeirri verkþekkingu sem skapaði þau og ástæða er til að varðveita. The Convention for the protection of World Culturaland Natural Heritage was adopted by UNESCO’s General Assembly on November 16th 1972, 40 years ago. States Parties work together to protect and nurturethe heritage of the world, declare a joint responsibility and commit to preserve the heritage for future generations. World Heritage sites have great appeal and are among the most visited tourist destinations of the world. The organization states that tourism, operated on the basis of sustainable development, has potential to generate funds, useful for the protection of the World Heritage sites, and contribute to improve the living of the surrounding community as well as increase awareness of the value of the sites. The Icelandic turf buildings along with associated residential landscape are listed for the proposed nomination on the World Heritage List. The list moulds the policy in each country with regard to protection, promotion and tourism. UNESCO encourages member states of the convention, to prepare the tentative list with the participation of stakeholders such as municipal authorities, NGOs and the surrounding community. Turf buildings are the gems of Icelandic built heritage. They describe the cultural values of the community as well as the social and technological changes that have taken place over the centuries.
