<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">The main emphasis of this thesis is to look at practical uses of role-playing games in teaching. There will be mentioned many of the most influential thinkers on education through history. I also wanted to create role-playing games which would be simple and practical for teachers to use in their teaching, or to use as an inspirational tool in making their own role-playing games. Being a historian and a role-player influences the making of the games that follow. According to my opinion it is important to make teaching fun and interesting, because I think that learning is most effective when you can enjoy it. Playing games is a natural part of human behavior so it makes sense to use games in teaching.
The thesis is divided into academic chapter where games, role-playing games and drama in teaching are the subject and the chapter concludes with a summary. Some of the most influencial thinkers in education through the times will be mentioned. The ideas of Plato about education, and a short summary of the ideas of Locke, Kant, Fröbel, Vygotsky and Piaget among others that I consider important. My goal is to demonstrate that ideas about the connections between learning and games is far from new. Then follows general teaching instructions for the use of role-playing games and a small game bank with role-playing games of various kinds. Then follows discussions and final words. In an appendix are a few ideas on evaluations to be used when teaching with role-playing methods.</dim:field>
