Hugtakið hvatning er útskýrt, jafnt innri sem ytri hvatning. Fjallað er um helstu hvatakenningar, þarfa- sem og ferliskenningar, jafnframt er gerð grein fyrir niðurstöðum viðtala sem tekin voru við starfsmenn og stjórnendur sem vinna í árangurstengdu umhverfi. Rannsóknin var eigindleg og varpar ljósi á upplifun viðmælenda af því að starfa í árangurstengdu starfsumhverfi. Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar voru að tenging launa við árangur hafi hvetjandi áhrif á starfsmenn en að auki hefur markmiðasetning og samanburður við aðra áhrif til hvatningar, þó er ekki hægt að alhæfa út frá þeim niðurstöðum. This thesis explores employee motivation and which factors of motivation have the most effect on salespeople working for an Icelandic telecommunications company. The concept of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, is defined. Major theories of motivation are outlined, need based theories and process theories of motivation, as well are the conclusions of interviews that were conducted with employees and managers presented. The research method was qualitative and provides insight into the interviewees experience of working in a pay-for-performance job environment. The conclusion of the research was that incentive-based pay motivates the employees, but goal setting and peer comparison are motivating factors as well.
