Í rannsókn þessari er leitast við að meta fjárhagsleg áhrif þjónustu við skemmtiferðaskip á kaupstaðinn Húsavík. Unnið er út frá gögnum frá stjórnsýslu síðustu ára með það að markmiði að sjá hvort þjónustan skili hagnaði eða tapi fyrir höfnina, stjórnsýsluna og bæjarfélagið í heild. Einnig var framkvæmd eigindleg rannsókn með djúpviðtölum við valda aðila ferðaþjónustunnar.
Rannsóknin sýnir að bein hagræn áhrif skemmtiferðaskipa eru jákvæð fyrir Húsavíkurbæ en að óbein hagræn áhrif eru óveruleg. Gert er grein fyrir þeim vangaveltum ferðaþjónustuaðila um hvernig betur mætti nýta þessa þróun þeim öllum til framdráttar.
This study seeks to assess the financial impact of cruise ship services on the town of Húsavík. The work is based on data from the administration of recent years with the aim of seeing whether the service returns a profit or a loss for the harbor, the administration and the municipality as a whole. A qualitative study was also conducted using in-depth interviews with selected members of the tourism industry.
The study shows that the direct economic impact of cruise ships is positive for Húsavík, but that the indirect economic impact is insignificant. The speculations of tourism operators on how this development could be better utilized to the benefit of all of them are explained.
