<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">This study seeks to deepen the reader´s understanding of the possible effect that social media may have on the body image of individuals who define their gender as male. The study was conducted using a qualitative methodology. Six male participants in their thirties were interviewed. They described their experiences on social media and the possible effects on their body image. At the same time, the study deals with the image of masculinity in modern society and examines their attitudes towards it and aims to get insight into the lives of the participants. The social media app Instagram is especially discussed in the academic discussions; furthermore, the app often appears in the researcher´s conversations with participants. The results of the study indicate that individuals who define their gender as male are exposed to both positive and negative effects of social media on their self-image. Most of them have experienced mental illness, physical ailments, and unrealistic demands on themselves due to comparisons with other men. They all felt that they were receptive of social media influences in different ways depending on their stages in life. They agreed that men should break out of the shell and express their feelings, be aware of the impact of social media, and avoid unrealistic demands that pervade society.
