<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">Payment card fraud has increased significantly in the past decade due to technological innovations and increased usage of payment cards. Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated in their attacks, finding new ways of bypassing security systems to access card information. Previous research has focused on the direct cost of fraud and its prevention, rather than the indirect cost. This study examines one such potential cost: the change in a victim’s purchasing behaviour following payment card fraud. It is a research area that is often neglected or overlooked, though not ignored. Earlier research explores how the perception of safety, security, and trust affect payment modes and concludes that these factors impact purchase behaviour. The study concludes that in order to minimise the adverse effects of fraud, financial institutions should focus on improving trust among victims of fraud.</dim:field>
