En á einu sviði hefur leiðrétting vandamálsins orðið of mikil.
<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="is">Great strides have been achieved regarding gender disparity. But there is one place where the problem has been overcorrected. In universities across most developed countries males are falling behind when it comes to enrolment rates. In some countries men only account for
approximately a third of students. Using the far-reaching questionnaire by the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis, where data are collected from students in all junior colleges in Iceland, the study examines various variables to account for this disparity.
Participants were all junior college students that attended school the day of the data collection. Consistent with previous studies, having both parents at home, better financial situation and better school performance had a bigger effect on male student’s intention to
enrol in university. Some results were inconclusive such as the variable of cannabis use which did not show significant relationship with intention to enrol in university. Other variables with little prior research such as attitude towards school and alcohol use had bigger
effects on female students’ intention to enrol in university. Future research is needed to address the problem further, perhaps by using a sample of younger participants. Keywords:
