<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">This study investigates the performance and durability of the Össur NAVii knee prosthetic through the optimization of spline geometry and the evaluation of various material compositions under accelerated aging conditions. The research focuses on the impact of an involute spline profile and the incorporation of ferromagnetic steel on torque performance. Results demonstrate that the involute profile significantly reduces mechanical play, maintaining user satisfaction over extended use. Among the materials tested, 304 stainless steel exhibited the least mechanical play, whereas titanium and ceramic materials showed higher wear rates. Ferromagnetic steel did not significantly affect torque performance, suggesting potential for further exploration. The study was limited by time constraints, which restricted the number of test runs per sample and led to occasional jig failures. Nonetheless, the findings indicate that uncoated aluminum with an involute profile is a cost-effective solution, with the possibility of enhancing performance through additional hard coatings or alternative materials. Future work will focus on completing the accelerated aging process and further refining spline design and material selection to develop more reliable and durable prosthetic knees.</dim:field>
