Til að komast að niðurstöðu er rýnt í skriflegar heimildir, refsikenningar skoðaðar og leitast við að finna tengsl opinna úrræða við þær. Niðurstöður sýna að opin úrræði á Íslandi falla ekki undir eina staka kenningu, heldur nokkrar þeirra. This thesis explores theories of punishment, how they are structured, and under which theories the open sanctions of the Icelandic criminal justice system fall. To reach a conclusion, written sources are analyzed, punishment theories examined, and efforts made to identify the connections between open sanctions and these theories.
